Možda se pitaš koliko dugo ne moraš da menjaš tampon.

Ako koristiš tampon po prvi put, sasvim je normalno da se pitaš tako nešto. Koliko vremenski možeš da nosiš tampon zavisi od toga do koje faze je stigla tvoja menstruacija, i koliko je obilna. Savršeno bi bilo da ga promeniš otprilike na svaka četiri sata. Međutim, ako smatraš da to moraš da radiš češće kako bi sprečila curenje, možda treba da pređeš na one koji imaju veću moć upijanja. Tampon možeš da nosiš najviše osam sati.

Uvek ga promeni pre nego što počne da curi. Kada končić počne da se natapa, znaćeš da je vreme za nov tampon. Najviše krvi se obično gubi na početku menstruacije, pa je prvih par dana potrebno češće da menjaš tampon.

Sasvim je u redu da nosiš tampon preko noći. Ali je važno da ga ne ostavljaš duže nego što je to bezbedno. Zato stavi nov tampon pre nego što kreneš na spavanje i podesi alarm kako bi ga izvadila osam sati kasnije. Ako si spavalica ili ne možeš da se organizuješ, bezbednije je da koristiš higijenski uložak tokom noći. Nošenje tampona duže od osam sati može da poveća rizik od nastanka sindroma toksičnog šoka, stoga je važno da to ne radiš.

Tampon bi trebalo da ti pruži osećaj pouzdane zaštite, zahvaljujući čemu možeš da uživaš u bilo kakvim aktivnostima i sportu. To je zato što je diskretno smešten i što ostaje na mestu, bez obzira na to koliko se pomeraš. Ipak, sportovi dovode do znojenja intimne zone, što privlači bakterije, pa postaješ podložna infekcijama. Stoga stavi nov tampon nakon fizičke aktivnosti. Ako si prinuđena da to uradiš u ne tako sjajnim higijenskim objektima, obavezno ponesi antibakterijski gel za suvo pranje ruku.

Za razliku od higijenskih uložaka, tampone možeš da nosiš tokom plivanja, tako da ne moraš da brineš o mrljama na kupaćem kostimu. Stavi nov tampon neposredno pre ulaska u vodu, i pažljivo uvuci končić u kupaći da se ne bi video. Uvek vodi računa da izvadiš tampon čim izađeš iz vode. Pošto će upiti nešto vode, neće biti toliko efikasan kasnije. Što se tiče higijene, najbolje je da zameniš tampon u koji je, osim vode, možda prodrla neka bakterija.

Should you change your tampon when exercising and swimming?

Tampons are tucked away discreetly and stay put while exercising on your period, however much you move around or how tight your gym shorts might be. It’s easy to see why many women+ feel confident enjoying different sports and activities while wearing them! 

Whether you choose a tampon or a towel when exercising, keep in mind that your V-Zone (everything to do with your vagina, vulva and the V-shaped front of your body that you can see) can become sweaty afterwards. Since this can attract bacteria and make you more prone to infection, it’s best to change into a fresh tampon (or towel) soon after you’ve finished. Make sure you have hand sanitizer with you in case it’s not possible to wash your hands before and after changing your period product. 

Tampons are a particularly great option for going swimming while on your period. Just remember to use a fresh one before taking a dip for maximum protection and always take it out as soon as you can after you get out of the water. Why? Well, your tampon will absorb some of the water you’re swimming in, so it won’t be as effective afterwards. It’s also possible for some bacteria to get picked up from the water so it’s more hygienic to change into a fresh tampon just in case. Otherwise, you can swim, dive and paddle without worrying about your period!

What should I do if my tampon feels uncomfortable?

If you can feel your tampon in your vagina once you’ve inserted it, then it’s probably not quite in the right place. Often, it’s because you haven’t put it in far enough! If that’s the case, use the string to pull your tampon out and try again with a new one. 

Putting in a tampon can feel a little strange at first, but just remember that it’s normal to touch our own bodies – nothing to be afraid or ashamed of! It might help to try using tampons in the comfort of your own home for the first few times, so you can feel as relaxed as possible. If you’re unsure about putting it far in, bear in mind that there’s no need to worry. Your tampon sits in your vagina, and thanks to your cervix (the bit that connects the vagina to the uterus), there is no way for your tampon to get lost or misplaced.
